What Manchester United really thought of Sergio Reguilon after sending him back from his loan spell

Journalist Mike McGrath has shared what Manchester United actually thought of Sergio Reguilon after terminating the Tottenham Hotspur full-back’s loan in the January transfer window.

Sergio Reguilon looks set to find himself on the books of a third club this month. The Spaniard went into January on loan at Manchester United. However, he saw his time at Old Trafford cut short and he returned to Tottenham.

However, it appears that Ange Postecoglou has no intention to use him in his side. Reguilon is on course to undergo a medical with Brentford today before completing a loan move for the rest of the campaign.

Manchester United were actually happy with Sergio Reguilon

Obviously, the 27-year-old would have hoped that he would prove himself in Erik ten Hag‘s squad. However, he only completed 90 minutes on one occasion in the Premier League – the 3-0 loss at home to Bournemouth.

Certainly, he seems unlikely to go down in United folklore as an inspired signing. However, it appears that the club’s hierarchy were not too disappointed with the full-back.

Speaking on the podcast, McGrath suggested that United were content with his contribution.

“They were quite happy with him at United. He had a terrible, terrible record. I think he lost nine out of the 12 games he played, or he featured in, which is maybe a reflection on United more than him. But they were actually quite happy with him, in terms of he covered for Luke Shaw and Malacia adequately and he filled a job. But yeah, he did get sent back. I think this Brentford one suits all parties,” he said.

Brentford move may suit Tottenham left-back a lot more

In fairness to Reguilon, he did not have the easiest task when he made the move. He arrived at the very end of the summer transfer window. And of course, Manchester United are not enjoying the best period right now.

Reguilon had some bright moments. But he did not feature consistently for ten Hag’s side. So it was always going to be a challenge.

As McGrath notes, a move to Brentford could be a lot more beneficial for Reguilon. And Tottenham will hope that it proves to be the spell which sees his stock rise after an underwhelming first-half of the campaign.
