What Man City have told Joao Cancelo as he really wants to join Barcelona
- Exclusive from Graeme Bailey
TBR Football understands that Joao Cancelo is nearing an exit from Manchester City but he is giving Barcelona time to find a transfer solution.
Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal are trying to finalise a deal for the Manchester City defender, who has fallen out of favour completely under Pep Guardiola.
TBR Football has been told that Joao Cancelo is open to joining the Saudi side but would prefer to re-join Barcelona if a deal was possible.
Cancelo spent last season on loan with the Catalan club and he performed well with four goals and five assists across all competitions.
Manager Hansi Flick is open to him returning to the squad, but Barca’s ongoing financial issues means a deal is not yet able to progess.
Cancelo is waiting to accept the Saudi proposal to see if Barcelona can find a solution with another loan deal.

What Manchester City have told Joao Cancelo
There is no future for Cancelo at the Etihad Stadium. After falling out of Guardiola’s plans, City are set on offloading Cancelo this summer.
City have told the 30-year-old, who they signed for in 2019, that they do not plan on including him in their Premier League squad, so he needs to move on in the next week.
Pressure is now mounting on Cancelo to accept the move to Saudi despite his preference being a return to Spain.
report that Al Hilal have offered Cancelo a three-year contract worth around £15 million per season.
Barcelona’s financial issues
Barcelona are keen on Cancelo returning this summer but their financial problems makes a deal very difficult.
The Spanish side are still yet to register summer signing Dani Olmo as they first need to sell to cut their wage bill.
Ilkay Gundogan’s move to Manchester City was one deal that Barcelona pushed quickly to help lower their wage bill, and the likes of former City winger Ferran Torres could also be sold to help the Spanish side manage their books.
