What Man City are now prepared to do with Erling Haaland amid Barcelona interest

Manchester City’s recruitment has been near perfect under Pep Guardiola’s stewardship.

Man City are gunning for their fifth consecutive Premier League title this season, spearheaded by Erling Haaland.

Haaland is the leading example of City’s excellent dealings in the transfer market as they managed to land his signature for just due to a release clause in his Borussia Dortmund contract.

Though, TBR Football can reveal that the Norway international also has certain clauses in his City contract – which the club are now trying to alter.

Here’s the latest from TBR’s transfer specialist Graeme Bailey.

Man City want to delay Erling Haaland’s release clause

TBR Football understands that Manchester City are ready to agree terms with Haaland over a new deal that would keep his release clauses but in return, they want them delayed.

City have been in talks with Haaland’s representatives since 2022 over a prospective new deal as they had hoped the Norwegian superstar would agree to take out the clauses – which in theory kick in from 2025.

A previous clause was due to be active in 2024, but Pep Guardiola’s decision to sign his last deal meant they were deactivated.

Now Haaland’s current deal means that City could lose him next summer if any forthcoming suitor activates his release clause. It is not known how much that clause is but it is understood to be in excess of £150million.

Haaland open to signing fresh terms amid Barcelona interest

Haaland is open to signing fresh terms and TBR Football understands the deal would see him become the Premier League’s highest-paid player.

TBR are told that City realise the release clauses are non-negotiable for Haaland’s team but the terms around them are not – so they now are looking at the prospect of a new deal before the summer, which would then see any clauses pushed back to at least 2026.

Barcelona have long been linked with Haaland and we understand that president Joan Laporta has made bringing the 24-year-old to the club one of his priorities – even possibly as early as next summer.
