What Kieran Trippier told Newcastle fans last season makes crucial reading for Tottenham fans and Ange Postecoglou

Kieran Trippier perhaps proved just how much his Tottenham Hotspur days still mean to him with his efforts to beat and ruffle the feathers of Arsenal players in Newcastle United’s recent Carabao Cup semi-final win.

Eddie Howe turned to his old reliant Trippier to prevent Arsenal from overturning their first leg deficit, and the plan certainly worked for Newcastle.

Tottenham fans were delighted with Trippier for getting one over on their rivals, with talk of the defender being ‘proper COYS’.

That being said, it might now be time for Tottenham fans to take notice of an emotional exchange Trippier actually had with his own supporters last season, when Newcastle weren’t performing so well.

Kieran Trippier’s rant was very relevant to Tottenham’s injury crisis now

Back in November 2023, Newcastle were in a much worse position and ill-feeling towards Howe and the club’s players seemed to spearhead after a 2-0 defeat away at Bournemouth.

And at the full-time whistle, a passionate Trippier actually headed to confront Newcastle’s travelling fans.

Trippier could be heard saying: “How many injuries have we got?”

And then speaking to after the game Trippier said: “The fans are emotional.

“They have travelled a long way. I had a chat with one of them, saying we are giving everything and there’s no need to panic.

“We got beat and we apologise for that result but the lads are giving everything.”

Now, Tottenham are in a very similar situation, if not slightly worse.

Postecoglou’s side are being rendered lifeless by injuries and exhaustion, and Tottenham’s manager seems endlessly frustrated by the same old questions.

Ange Postecoglou and his players don’t deserve the blame at Tottenham

At his press conference after losing to Aston Villa in the FA Cup, Postecoglou literally had his head in his hands when he was asked why his Spurs team weren’t looking like a ‘Postecoglou side’.

At the time of Trippier’s rant at the end of 2023, some fans were calling for Howe to be sacked and Newcastle ended up finishing that campaign in seventh position, courtesy of a late surge.

And whilst it seems far too premature to suggest that Tottenham can go on a similar run before the season ends, there is a message in the comparison.

It’s fair to say that Postecoglou could be being more pragmatic right now, but it’s almost superfluous to blame the tactics, the manager or the players when 11 first team members are missing.

That seemed to be the message Trippier was pedalling to Newcastle fans last season – the players are giving it everything.

And that in itself proves why Tottenham should continue to believe in Postecoglou’s vision – he’s not to blame for the club’s injury crisis.
