What Kevin Danso previously said about playing for Arsenal as centre-back closes in on Tottenham move

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been crying out for the club to strengthen Ange Postecgolou’s options in defence of late, and it seems as if Spurs have finally landed on the signing of Kevin Danso.

Tottenham have stolen the march on Wolverhampton Wanderers who originally thought they were in pole position to recruit Danso from Lens, a 26-year-old who has played in England before.

Starting out at Reading’s academy, Danso then swapped England for Germany until he returned to the Premier League with Southampton in 2019.

Danso has made six appearances in the English top flight, numbers he’ll now add to in a Tottenham shirt once his deal is finalised.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Danso’s move to Spurs, a big boost for Postecoglou who has also now lost Radu Dragusin to injury.

That being said, Tottenham fans might be intrigued to hear some old Danso comments about playing for Arsenal.

Kevin Danso always dreamed of playing for Arsenal

Danso actually played against Spurs’ rivals Arsenal twice in the Champions League in 2023, beating them 2-1 and also being part of a humbling 6-0 defeat during the group stage.

And before facing Arsenal in the second of those two ties, Danso made an admission about dreaming of playing in the red side of north London in an interview with .

On a positive note from a Spurs point of view, the Austria international also confessed his ambitions to return to the Premier League, but then admitted that it would be with Arsenal, were he to have the choice.

Speaking in 2023, Danso said: “Yes of course [it’s a dream to play in the Premier League].

“When you’re young and in England, you only think about the Premier League. That was it, Barcelona, Real or Bayern, given my origins.

“And if I could have, for one of my brothers, it would have been Arsenal.

“He even always wanted me to support them, even though I was a [Manchester] United fan like my big brother.”

Wolves infuriated by Tottenham’s last-minute Kevin Danso hijack

TBR Football understands that Danso will cost Tottenham around £21m, a late hijack which has infuriated Wolves.

Some at Wolves feel as if they have been used by Danso’ agent in order to get a better deal.

Wolves thought they had agreed a loan deal for the centre-back to strengthen Vitor Pereira’s options, but Spurs then swooped in.

Danso was at a very different stage of his career last time he appeared in England, and it will now be intriguing to see how much the defender has progressed.

Danso was actually involved in Southampton’s historic 9-0 defeat to Leicester City back in 2019, coming on as a half-time substitute in that game.

And the Austrian will certainly be hoping to create some more favourable memories in N17.
