What Kepa Arrizabalaga initially wanted to do this summer before Arsenal came in

Arsenal are yet to make their first signing of the summer, but it may not be long before they get one through the door.

Indeed, Arsenal are working on numerous deals at the moment.

Martin Zubimendi is close to joining Arsenal, while Benjamin Sesko is in talks with the Gunners too.

On top of that, Arsenal are closing in on signing a player from one of their biggest rivals.

Kepa Arrizabalaga has been linked to Arsenal, and according to Matt Law, speaking on the London is Blue Podcast, this deal is basically done.

Interestingly, the journalist says that he’s surprised to see Kepa headed to Arsenal, noting that he was told earlier this summer that Kepa wanted to be a number one rather than a backup.

Kepa wanted to be a number one

Law shared why he was surprised to see Kepa headed to Arsenal.

The journalist says he was shocked to see Kepa headed to the Emirates due to the fact he’d been told that the goalkeeper wanted to be a number one elsewhere.

“Yeah, my initial information was he didn’t really want to be a backup, having been playing every week at Bournemouth. And I know there was interest from some good clubs to make him number one. So that surprised me,” Law said.

“I haven’t seen it’s gone through yet.

“I feel like it’s basically done. Yeah, that surprised me that he would be up for that. Let’s put it that way from what I had heard.”

Arsenal look set to sign Kepa, and this could end up being a real coup.

Indeed, while Kepa hasn’t quite lived up to his pricetag, at one point, Kepa was the most expensive goalkeeper on the planet, and he was valued as such for a reason.

Interestingly, Kepa hasn’t had the best of times against Arsenal over the years.

The Spaniard has only kept one clean sheet in nine appearances against the Gunners, and, ironically, that was with Bournemouth rather than with Chelsea.

As for becoming a number two, Kepa will be hoping to get minutes in the cups with Arsenal, and with the trajectory Mikel Arteta’s side have been on, he may well win some trophies along the way.
