‘What I’ve seen’: Balogun says 26-year-old Rangers player is trying harder than ever before in training now
The World Cup break has seen plenty of change take place at Glasgow Rangers.
Manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst was sacked, with Steven Gerrard’s former assistant Michael Beale taking charge.
Balogun was part of the Rangers side that reached the Europa League final last season.
Despite regularly featuring throughout the competition, he was an unused substitute for the final.
In the summer, Balogun swapped Glasgow Rangers for Queens Park Rangers in the Championship.
The 34-year-old was once again working under Beale before he returned to Glasgow last week.
Balogun appears to be still in close contact with some of his Rangers teammates, and was asked about Alfredo Morelos.
The Nigerian international shared that Morelos has been doing extra training on his own and is working harder than ever.
Morelos has lost his place in Rangers’ starting line-up this season.
Given his contract ends next summer, he needs to find his best form once again to determine his future.
Morelos working harder than ever in training
: “I think Buf [Morelos] is a monumental figure there, he’s loved by the fans.
“Certainly, keeping him on and giving him a new deal would be a big sign for the club, and being able to keep one of their key players over the past few years.
“I think for him, he’s probably still not up and running 100% because he came back from a big injury.
“Obviously, with Colak being in there now, it doesn’t make it easier because he’s just scoring goals for fun.
“So that means Buf isn’t getting as much game time as he used to.
“But from what I’ve seen, Morelos is working harder than ever before, doing extras even outside of the training ground.
“Just what he gives the team, even in terms of being a link-up player, I think it would be massive to keep him on board.”
Morelos future is up in the air
Since arriving from HJK in Finland in 2017, Morelos has reached double figures for goals in every season at the club.
His current tally of three is partly down to his injury issues, but also the form of summer signing Antonio Colak.
The return of Beale to Rangers might give Morelos the fresh start he needs this season to regain his place in the team.
, suggests Rangers could still retain Morelos pas the end of the season.
Even if Morelos is working harder than ever in training, it’s difficult to see why he would sign an extension if he’s no longer first choice.
