What impact will this long-term injury to a key Chelsea player have?

Although Chelsea’s 2015/16 campaign will remain in the memory for all the wrong reasons, the emergence of Kurt Zouma as a main-stay of their defence alongside outgoing club legend John Terry has been one of the few positives to take from the season for anyone associated with The Blues. However, the powerful young Frenchman has recently been ruled out of action for a period of around six months – a devastating blow for the individual, his club, and international side.

With France staging the Euro 2016 Championships in a little over four months’ time, it seems certain that Zouma will miss the tournament on home soil. Since the diagnosis, the player himself has tweeted: “Scan today has shown I injured my anterior cruciate ligament. I will have surgery this week and will come back stronger”. This is a mature and encouraging response and I have no doubt that he will return to the very top level by the time next season rolls around, but for now, let us examine the impact that Zouma’s lay-off will have on his club, country, and team-mates.
