What Harry Redknapp predicted when Tottenham first appointed Ange Postecoglou in 2023

After 24 games played in the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur are sat in 14th place, a far cry from the Champions League qualification Ange Postecoglou would have been hoping for.

Tottenham can still qualify for Europe’s elite competition next season, but that would require Postecoglou to inspire a Europa League win.

Right now, amid a serious injury crisis in N17, that appears unlikely.

However, once Postecoglou recovers some of his key performers, the likes of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, it’s certainly not impossible.

That being said, former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp enjoyed some brilliant European nights under the lights at White Hart Lane, an era when Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch were combining in a 4-4-2.

Harry Redknapp thought Ange Postecoglou would change things at Tottenham

Given Postecoglou’s struggles of late, it is now interesting to recall Redknapp’s words when Tottenham first appointed the former Celtic manager in 2023.

Redknapp actually admitted that Tim Cahill first made him aware of Postecoglou’s talent, a manager he seemed to tip for a lot of success in north London.

Speaking to about the appointment, Redknapp said: “Yeah, I like it.

“I’ve said before I met him out in Australia, when I went out and managed the Jordan national team, he managed the Australian team.

“Tim Cahill played for the Australian team and I was just chatting to him before the game and he said ‘our manager’s fantastic’.

“I said ‘really?’, he said, ‘Harry, he is top drawer’ and that was it. I’d never heard of him at that time.

“Timmy Cahill said he was brilliant and that’s stuck with me. Then I’ve watched how he’s done at Celtic and he’s been brilliant, I love him.

“There’s no fannying [around] with him, he says it as it is, I like him. He don’t care, if a player misses a goal he’s not afraid to say ‘my old woman could’ve scored that’.

“[Postecoglou] will get the message over early. I think the lads will love him, they seem to love him at Celtic.”

Harry Redknapp compared to Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham

Of course, Redknapp was ultimately unable to win a trophy at Tottenham, even if he did create some excellent memories at the club.

Redknapp’s only major honour came whilst he was at Portsmouth, winning the FA Cup in 2008.

In terms of Redknapp’s record at Spurs, in his 198 games in charge he yielded a points per match ratio of 1.73, assuming cup games are also rewarded with points for the ease of comparison.

And so far, after 80 games in charge, Postecoglou has a slightly inferior number of 1.60.

Tottenham are sticking by Postecoglou for now, but it is clear that fast improvement is needed, even if players are injured.
