What Harry Kane has said about Mathys Tel as Tottenham and Arsenal offered Bayern Munich striker

Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel could suddenly become an option for north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in the final days of the January transfer window.

19-year-old Tel has played only 396 minutes under Vincent Kompany at Bayern this season, and both Arsenal and Tottenham are now searching for a forward before the deadline.

In fact, Tel has been offered to Premier League clubs as a result of a recent fall out with Kompany in Bavaria.

On Arsenal’s part, Mikel Arteta and his transfer team are desperately looking for a short-term option who improves their strikeforce, a deal that wouldn’t compromise the club’s summer plans.

Similarly, Tottenham also want better cover up top given injuries to the likes of Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson.

Yang Min-hyeok is leaving Tottenham on loan, stressing the idea that Spurs will add a replacement before next week.

Harry Kane explains why Mathys Tels could be brilliant in north London

That being said, former Spurs striker Harry Kane was previously very complimentary about Tel when he first arrived in Germany back in 2023.

Should Arsenal or Tottenham decide to make a move for the France under-21 international, they may be buoyed by Kane’s comments about how good Tel is behind the scenes.

Kane was speaking at a Champions League press conference before Bayern beat Manchester United 4-3 last season, a game in which Tel played five or so minutes.

England’s captain described Tel as ‘very confident’ and praised the youngster’s mentality.

Kane said: “He’s started the season really well. I like the way he trains. He’s always pushing himself and is fully committed.

“Every time he came in he made a difference and is very confident. We’ll need all players.”

Mathys Tel sees Harry Kane as a role model

Speaking in an interview himself with the a couple of months later, Tel actually admitted that Kane had been something of a ‘role model’ for him.

Tel wasn’t keen to join Chelsea this month because he doesn’t want to swap one bench for another in west London, but perhaps there is merit for either Arsenal or Spurs to guarantee more game time for the youngster.

Speaking about Kane, Tel said: “He’s a great striker. He has shown that across his career. I’m a striker too, so he’s a role model for me.

“It’s important to have people to learn from technically and in terms of finishing. Often I don’t even have to ask him.

“He just comes over to me and tells me: ‘Mathys, you can do that, or that’. He’s a role model to me, and he is helping me a lot.”
