What Frenkie de Jong said about Tottenham in 2019 is now very interesting after recent bid rumours

Frenkie de Jong has been linked with a surprise move to Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the summer transfer window.

Ange Postecoglou was eyeing midfield reinforcements during the January transfer window but a move for a new midfielder failed to materialise.

Tottenham have snapped up Swedish youngster Lucas Bergvall, with the talented midfielder set to join this summer. But Spurs remain in the market for a fresh face in the middle of the park and despite links to Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong is also of interest.

Indeed, it was claimed just today that Tottenham have launched a £51 million bid to sign De Jong.

The report from Spain claims that the Lilywhites have also offered the Dutch midfielder a four-year contract.

Interestingly, De Jong has already admitted that he came close to signing for Spurs back in 2019.

De Jong’s once admitted he nearly joined Tottenham

As quoted by , De Jong labelled Spurs a ‘very stable’ club and admitted he was tempted by the idea of moving to north London before joining Barca four-and-a-half years ago.

“I considered their [Tottenham] offer long and hard. I see Tottenham as a very stable club, and they are only getting better,” he said.

“They give young players a chance and I see Mauricio Pochettino as a manager who really improves young players. I like the kind of football they are playing. I think it would have suited my game.”

Before making the switch to Camp Nou, De Jong was widely recognised as one of the brightest young midfielders in world football after a brilliant spell at Ajax.

Of course, he would have been familiar with Tottenham after facing them in the Champions League semi-final just months before making these comments.

Ironically, Spurs were arguably anything but ‘stable’ in the years that followed De Jong’s comments after Pochettino’s departure.

But since Ange Postecoglou’s arrival, the north Londoners seem to be back on the right track once again.

Whether or not De Jong would still be tempted by a move to Spurs remains to be seen.
