What Brazil’s media honestly felt about Arsenal star Gabriel Magalhaes’ display vs Paraguay
Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes has certainly not found it straightforward to forge his path with the Brazilian national team to date.
At the age of 26-years-old, Gabriel only has eight caps for Brazil, despite starring for Arsenal for some time now.
The centre-back has needed to be patient for his chances, but now appears to be a firm starter alongside Paris Saint-Germain’s Marquinhos.
That being said, Gabriel’s emergence as a starter for Brazil has unfortunately coincided with a disappointing few years for the famous footballing nation.
And after losing 1-0 to Paraguay in the early hours of Wednesday morning, things are certainly not remedied just yet.
Brazil are now fifth in the South American qualifying group for the upcoming World Cup, level on points with Venezuela after eight games and behind the likes of Ecuador and Uruguay.
Gabriel Magalhaes told he was at fault for Brazil’s shock defeat to Paraguay
provided the most comprehensive review of the Arsenal defender’s display, who played just ahead of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
Gabriel was criticised for his part in Paraguay’s goal, and it was pointed out that he was often arguing with his opponents too.

Globo shared: “He takes more risks than his teammate when it comes to passing the ball, whether through the middle or through long balls.
“He seemed nervous at the start of the match, when he got into arguments with his Paraguayan opponents.
“He made a mistake in the goal when he cut the ball back to the edge of the area, allowing Diego Gomez to finish.”
Of course, it’s interesting to remember that Gabriel was criticised by Brazilian media for not taking enough risks with the ball last time out, seemingly something he was trying to rectify.
provided their own succinct review: “He cleared the ball badly, which led to the Paraguayan goal” – focusing on the same incident.
then at least provided one positive: “Reasonable in aerial duels and irregular in passes.”
Gabriel might partner Riccardo Calafiori in North London derby
Although likely disappointed with Brazil’s defeat himself, Gabriel will now need to quickly refocus ahead of the North London derby on Sunday.
Riccardo Calafiori is a doubt for the game, but if the Italian is fit then he may start alongside Gabriel in Arsenal’s back four.
Mikel Arteta has some difficult decisions to make for the tie, given Martin Odegaard is also likely to be missing in addition to Declan Rice.
Arsenal may turn to Ethan Nwaneri, even if Arteta has been reticent to rush youngsters in the limelight in the past.
Some tough calls, especially with two fixtures against Atalanta and Manchester City on the horizon to consider as well.
