What Arne Slot has warned Ryan Gravenberch not to do as £34.2m man learns new midfield role at Liverpool

Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz have stolen the headlines so far under Arne Slot – but Ryan Gravenberch is also impressing in a new regime at Liverpool.

The Liverpool No.38 endured a tough debut campaign at Anfield following a move from Bayern Munich in September 2023 – making just 12 Premier League starts under Jurgen Klopp.

However – after Liverpool failed in an attempt to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad – Ryan Gravenberch has shone in a No.6 role at the base of midfield, although Arne Slot has still warned his fellow Dutchman about doing one thing…

What Arne Slot has told Ryan Gravenberch

A story from the now shares some finer details about the 45-year-old’s start to life on Merseyside.

It is said that Slot has warned Gravenberch not to watch footage of the leading operators in the No.6 role across Europe – such as Manchester City star Rodri – with the Dutchman preferring for the Netherlands international to learn the position internally at the AXA Training Centre.

The Daily Mail add that Johnny Heitinga has led several analysis sessions to show the 22-year-old how to shine in the No.6 role, a position he has not usually been deployed in throughout his career.

Gravenberch has typically played as a roaming No.8 who is afforded the freedom to explore both boxes, making appearances in that position throughout his career so far.

Liverpool No.38 is clearly a quick learner

Gravenberch is doing an outstanding job in the No.6 role for someone who has never really been tasked with such responsibility at this level, although that is to be expected of a player who already has 263 club appearances and 12 caps for the Netherlands under his belt at the age of just 22.

Whatever Slot and his backroom staff have been telling the man from Amsterdam, it is working nicely.

As SofaScore shows, Gravenberch made interceptions and two tackles in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, while he also managed to avoid letting any opponent dribble past him.

Furthermore, the Dutchman completed 84% of his passing and took 61 touches on a day where he was always available to receive possession – also laying on a perfect ball for Salah to assist Diaz for the opener after intercepting Casemiro’s pass well.

Hopefully, Gravenberch can keep shining in the No.6 role – if he does, it could save Liverpool millions in the transfer market.
