What Antonio Conte and Tottenham’s players did after hearing the fans cheering Emerson Royal being subbed off – journalist

Journalist Alasdair Gold has now shared on his what Antonio Conte and Tottenham Hotspur’s players did after hearing the fans cheering Emerson Royal being subbed off on Saturday.

Spurs picked up an important three points against Leeds United after a dramatic 4-3 win in north London.

Antonio Conte’s men fell behind on three occasions throughout the match. But they battled back with goals from Ben Davies, Harry Kane and Rodrigo Bentancur.

Royal didn’t enjoy his best afternoon before being replaced by Matt Doherty in the 57th minute. The Brazilian missed a glorious opportunity in the first-half and was wasteful in possession.

According to Football.London’s Alasdair Gold, the fans actually cheered when the 23-year-old was replaced in the second-half. And right after the ‘uncomfortable’ moment, Conte and the Spurs players comforted Emerson as he left the pitch.

, Gold described the moment when Tottenham fans celebrated Royal being replaced.

“It was the moment Matt Doherty came on for Emerson and as they read Emerson’s name going off, massive cheers among 60,000 people,” he said.

“It was so uncomfortable to watch. It was a bit like in a flipped around way when Tanguy [Ndombele] came off against Morecambe and he wasn’t going off the pitch. It was really slow and the fans were starting to get really annoyed with him and booking.

“You felt in that moment, that’s a tough one to come back from. And it kind of felt a bit like this with Emerson.

“Completely opposite as he was coming off the pitch, he wasn’t going slowly or anything, he was getting off the pitch. But just to hear that noise his head went down.

“You could see Conte, the staff, his teammates were all kind of like putting their hands on his head as if to say ‘don’t worry mate’.”

Spurs fans have been growing frustrated by Conte’s choice to continuously play Emerson in recent weeks, so their reaction comes as no surprise.

The Brazilian has been putting in underwhelming performances this season but has managed to keep his place in the starting line-up.

The right wing-back role has caused a lot of frustration amongst the fans this season, with both Royal and Doherty failing to impress.

Conte clearly doesn’t feel that summer signing Djed Spence is ready to play for Tottenham just yet, much to the frustration of Spurs fans.

It’s an area that Spurs will seemingly have to strengthen in January. But it’ll mean that at least one of the three options for the position would have to find a move away from the club.
