‘What a story’ – Jurgen Klopp singles out Liverpool newcomer Adrian for praise after penalty heroics

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has expressed his delight that Adrian was the hero in the UEFA Super Cup, . Adrian only joined Liverpool nine days before the Super Cup but he won his first major trophy of his career.

The Spaniard – who was a free agent after leaving West Ham – was thrown into the deep end after Alisson suffered an injury against Norwich City last Friday. Adrian came on as a substitute in that game and started in the Super Cup.

Chelsea and Liverpool played out a 2-2 draw, taking the game to penalties after extra-time. After the first nine penalties went in, Adrian kept his nerve to block Tammy Abraham’s spot-kick with his feet.

: “What a story, Adrian! Like Rocky after he lost against Apollo Creed I think. He kept his nerves. I don’t know where Adrian was two weeks ago when we played City. He played an incredible game and made sensational saves. Being ready like he was ready tonight, it was incredible.”

TBR’s view

It is clear that Adrian is already a popular personality in the Liverpool team. Both Klopp and Virgil Van Dijk have come out with praise for him after this performance. It takes a special sort of player to go from a free agent to a cup winner in less than two weeks.

: “He showed me already that he is a proper personality in the dressing room. He was maybe louder than I was in the dressing room at half time. He was really on his toes.”

Considering Adrian has only just arrived, this shows his confidence and that will stand him in good stead to cover while Alisson is out. Liverpool might have a new fan favourite on their books.
