‘What a nightmare’: Aston Villa player slammed by Sky commentators after first-half moment v Chelsea

slammed Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings after a costly mistake in the first-half against Chelsea.

Steven Gerrard’s men got off to a promising start to the game but their work was undone in the fifth minute.

Ben Chilwell attempted a cross which was partially blocked by Jacob Ramsey and the ball looped high into the air.

It looked to be a simple ball for Mings to deal with, but the Villa defender completely mistimed his header. The ball fell kindly to Mason Mount who put Graham Potter’s side ahead.

And the Sky commentators were left baffled by the mistake at Villa Park today.

Mings slammed by commentators

, Smith and Hawthorne slammed Mings for his costly mistake in the first-half.

Hawthorne said: “It was a horrible header from Tyrone Mings who got it all wrong and [Mason] Mount in the perfect position to take advantage.”

“Well, you want to try and give him the benefit of the doubt, sometimes the wind can affect defenders but it’s as still as anything out there today,” Smith added.

“He just gets it horribly wrong, the centre-half. I just cannot explain how he manages to do this as the ball loops up.

“But Mason Mount, as per, makes the chance look pretty simple. What a nightmare from Tyrone Mings that is and for Aston Villa.”

Despite Mings’ error, Gerrard’s side were the much better team in the first-half. But they were denied by an excellent display of goalkeeping from Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The Blues shot stopper denied Villa on multiple occasions, with saves to deny Ramsey and Danny Ings particularly outstanding.

Raheem Sterling did get a good opportunity to double Chelsea’s lead at the end of the half, but the former Manchester City man rattled his effort off the crossbar.

Gerrard will be encouraged by a promising first-half and will be hoping his side can continue to create chances during the second period.
