‘We’ve let them down’: Rob Holding issues honest assessment on Arsenal’s season
Rob Holding has issued an honest assessment of Arsenal’s season to the following Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Chelsea, claiming Mikel Arteta’s side have let fans down and owe supporters ‘a lot’.
The Gunners’ victory at Stamford Bridge was their over the Blues and saw Arteta’s side do the double over their London rivals, having beaten a then-Frank Lampard managed side 3-1 in December and 2-1 in last season’s FA Cup final.
But Arsenal’s season has been far more mixed over the full 2020/21 term, having bowed out of the FA Cup to Southampton, crash out of the Europa League at the semi-final stage to Unai Emery’s Villarreal and are on a European spot.
It could be the first time in 25 years that Arsenal fail to qualify for a European tournament (), despite the introduction of a new competition in the form of the Europa Conference League from the start of next season.
Holding admits Arsenal’s performances have not been at the level expected of them by fans, and is eager to end the season on a high to offer supporters reason to be optimistic for the future.
“We owe the fans a lot after this season,” Holding . “We’ve let them down a few times, so if we can wrap up some points, wrap up some wins and give them something to look forward to going into next season.”

Arsenal supporters can take some comfort in a key player of their season coming out and stating that the players owe fans after the underwhelming results of the term, but actions on the pitch will speak far more with the future so uncertain in north London.
Morale amongst the Emirates Stadium fanbase is unlikely to be raised without some signs of a more positive tomorrow being on the horizon, which Arteta’s side can start to inspire by building on Wednesday’s victory and taking maximum points from their remaining games.
Holding, who has in all competitions and captained the side on a handful of occasions this term, can play a leading role in that fightback, as he cannot now regress having declared publicly that supporters are owed a lot.
