West Ham will hope incoming Wolves star Raul Jimenez is not a hit

Wolverhampton Wanderers are closing in on the signature of Raul Jimenez from Benfica this summer. the newly promoted side are set to bring the striker in on a season-long loan, with a view to a £30 million permanent deal should he succeed.

For one other Premier League side, the hope will be he does not prove to be overly successful. West Ham United would undoubtedly be left red-faced from both embarrassment and frustration if the Mexican fires goals galore for Wolves.

That is because the London club has tried on numerous occasions in the past to sign the striker.

In the summer of 2015, West Ham had then Atletico Madrid attacker Jimenez all lined up for a transfer. A deal seemed done and Slaven Bilic had his man. But, just days after the red tops all reported Jimenez was a work permit away from becoming a West Ham player, he turned up in Portugal and signed for Benfica instead. That did not stop West Ham trying for him again.

Last summer West Ham tried to bring Jimenez to London a second time. that West Ham wanted the player last July. It never happened.

This spring, the link emerged again. West Ham were monitoring his situation, so the hierarchy at West Ham are clearly big fans of the striker.

But he will be plying his trade for Wolves instead next season. West Ham fans will no doubt hope he flops. It will give them vindication over the failed pursuit of the Mexican and they can rest easy in the knowledge, ‘we’re not missing out on much, are we?’

However, if he thrives in English football, West Ham fans will be left scratching their heads as to why he is not doing so in Claret-and-Blue.
