West Ham want £40k-a-week Arsenal target Slaven Bilic said can really ‘hurt you’

West Ham United have reportedly been joined by Arsenal in the race to sign Sweden international Viktor Gyokeres.

On Tuesday, Ben Jacobs told that the Gunners are “one to watch” with regards to pursuing the Sporting Lisbon ace in 2024.

In November, reported that the Hammers were one of several clubs keeping tabs on Gyokeres ahead of the January transfer window.

Both West Ham and Arsenal could really do with bolstering their attacking ranks when the window opens in a few weeks’ time.

The Hammers are currently short of options up front, while the Gunners haven’t quite got a world-class out-and-out goalscorer at present.

Gabriel Jesus is obviously a world-class player but he’s not the most prolific scorer, while Eddie Nketiah is a decent back-up but hasn’t quite forced his way into regular starting contention.

West Ham and Arsenal eyeing Viktor Gyokeres

Meanwhile, Gyokeres has hit the ground running in the Portuguese capital following his move from Coventry City for a reported £20million.

The 25-year-old has 15 goals and seven assists from just 18 club appearances in all competitions this term. He also has five goals from 19 Sweden outings.

Slaven Bilic sung the player’s praises. The West Ham cult hero said last year, as per the : “He is a very strong striker.

“A player who can not only keep and hold the ball but he can hurt you. He can run into the channels and he’s strong.”

However, there is one significant issue for West Ham and Arsenal alike in their pursuit of Gyokeres. Namely that he apparently has a €100million (£87million) release clause.

In terms of negotiations, Sporting likely won’t want to sell him just a few months after signing him.

So if the Hammers of the Gunners want to sign the £40,000-a-week man (), they’d have to loosen their purse strings significantly.
