Jack Wilshere struggles should see West Ham turn to 23-year-old wanted by Leeds
West Ham United are fighting for their lives towards the bottom of the Premier League table and sit outside the drop zone by virtue of goal difference.
The Hammers have far too many quality players to even contemplate life in the Championship but David Moyes knows his players must begin producing the goods.
Aston Villa and Norwich are slipping further into the second tier so that could leave West Ham fighting it out with several other clubs to avoid the final spot.
It’s probably too premature to start thinking about who David Moyes sees as part of his plans for next season.
The situation with Jack Wilshere, however, should definitely earn academy graduate Josh Cullen the chance to make his mark at the London Stadium.
It was reported by the Daily Mail that the 23-year-old is being monitored by several clubs including Leeds.
His contract has recently been extended until 2021 but nothing long-term has been offered by the club.
West Ham have a proud history in allowing their youngsters the chance to shine in the first-team. After performing well at Charlton on loan this season, the midfielder deserves his chance.
With Wilshere desperately fighting another seemingly serious injury, Cullen would present an ideal midfield option for Moyes.
He can play as a box-to-box midfielder, or as a No.10 and he has the energy and drive to get around the pitch – in a similar style to the Wilshere.
Wilshere’s groin problem is showing no signs of clearing up. He has played just six times in the league during 2019/20 and has been missing since October.
Opportunity
Cullen has cut his teeth out on loan with Bradford, Bolton and this season with Charlton.
He is deserving of at least a chance to impress Moyes and he could be the exact player that West Ham need in their team.
He likes to put his foot on the ball, is constantly looking to play forwards and also does his bit defensively.
The Hammers have tried the big-money signing route in recent seasons and it’s not always proved a success.
Supporters would offer Moyes lots of credit if he allows Cullen the chance to show he is the heir to Wilshere’s throne.
