David Moyes should hand Ben Johnson chance to shine for West Ham United

West Ham United are yet to concede a goal since David Moyes replaced Manuel Pellegrini as the club’s new manager.

The Hammers thrashed Bournemouth 4-0 in his first game back in charge and defeated Gillingham in the FA Cup on Sunday.

There is still work to be done. West Ham are just two points outside the relegation zone, although the early prognosis under Moyes looks good.

This weekend will see the new boss face his first real selection conundrum since returning for a second spell in charge.

Ryan Fredericks picked up an injury at the Priestfield Stadium on Sunday, with Pablo Zabaleta replacing him.

The Argentine scored a second goal for the Hammers during the cup tie but perhaps Moyes should trust youth to replace Fredericks this weekend.

West Ham should perhaps instead utilise Ben Johnson. After missing some of the campaign with an injury of his own, the academy prospect is now fit and ready for a return.

Zabaleta only has the remainder of this season left on his contract. At 34-years-old he is unlikely to extend his stay at the London Stadium.

Now would represent the perfect opportunity to give Johnson a run in the team. The 19-year-old has played once for the first-team back in February during a loss to Manchester City.

Versatile

It might seem a risk to throw a youngster into regular action but West Ham have a history of trusting youth.

The squad right now is relatively young and it seems like the perfect time to give Johnson his opportunity.

He is probably a more like-for-like option to Fredericks than Zabaleta is and is deserving of his chance.
