West Ham: Striker deal to be confirmed; Reece Oxford update; Italy star linked

After a summer of tireless transfer battles in attempts to sign a striker, it seems that one could be confirmed this week, with Argentinean forward Jonathan Calleri’s loan move reportedly close to completion according to the . A move has been in the works for a while, but he has now been given a work permit which was the final obstacle, and an announcement is expected soon.

The youngster has a good record in South America, including spells at Boca Juniors and São Paulo, and has reportedly rejected a move to Inter Milan in favour of a season at the Olympic Stadium, so the deal is an impressive one for the Hammers. With doubts over how he will adapt to the physicality and pace of the Premier League, it seems likely that Calleri would not be the only striker to be brought in this summer, but it’s a start.

Another forward target being lined up should a bid for Carlos Bacca fail is said to be one of the men who provided one of the moments of Euro 2016 – Simone Zaza. The Italian’s bizarre run up led to a miss which cost his Italian side a place in the tournament, and West Ham are battling Wolfsburg for the striker, say the .

The former Sassuolo striker has found his playing time limited in Turin, scoring 5 goals in 19 games since his move to Juventus last summer, and a move away could be best for all parties. With a fee in the region of £20 million, Zaza may be a more realistic target than some of the other names they have been linked to, and he could be a good second choice behind Bacca if he should decide against a move to London.

The club are also busy at home, locked in contract disputes with under 21s captain Reece Oxford. The youngster is reportedly demanding a wage to fit his valuation of £18 million, claim the . With two years left to go on his current deal and both Manchester clubs said to be interested, the Hammers could be forced to sell their star asset.

The sale of such a promising talent would be a blow to West Ham, who have brought him through from a young age, but they are hoping to ensure that with sufficient clauses and add-ons, they can get a decent return on their investment if the central defender forces a move.

An emergency signing could also be needed after an unexpected injury to left back Aaron Cresswell could put him out of action for 6 months, claim the . The injury, picked up in a friendly, to his knee is likely to keep him out until January, and with little cover available in the current squad, a signing may be necessary.

It is a blow for the Hammers, with Cresswell having only missed three league games since his arrival at the club, and they may have to free up some funds reserved for other targets to ensure that his position is covered until his recovery mid-season.
