West Ham should step up interest in Mario Lemina after Jack Wilshere developments

West Ham’s move for free-agent Jack Wilshere has reportedly hit a stumbling block, with the Hammers only wanting to sign the midfielder on an initial one-year contract

Reservations over the player’s fitness have allegedly caused Manuel Pellegrini to proceed with caution in regards to offering a long-term deal to the 26-year-old, and it appears Wilshere could now join the long list of midfielders on the negotiating table.

The Chilean has expressed his desire to get the Hammers playing attacking and progressive football again next term, and views a quality midfield addition as vital in achieving this. High-profile names such as and  had been linked to east London, but talks for both seem to be stalling.

Perhaps he should revisit interest in Southampton’s Mario Lemina then . The ex-Juventus man would inject the quality Pellegrini is looking for in midfield, using his strength and low centre of gravity to burst through the lines towards goal, similar to Wilshere.

The player could certainly get on board with the idea of pushing towards European football, having been surprised to find himself scrapping to survive relegation upon moving from Turin, and he could quickly become an important member of West Ham’s squad.

Hammers fans will be becoming increasingly frustrated at being linked with marquee names, before seeing deals fall through without gathering any real traction, and Lemina – aside from Wilshere – is probably the most realistic West Ham target thus far.
