West Ham round-up: Offers for striker rejected; Manchester United follow target; Belgian defender rejected Hammers
The claim that West Ham have turned down what they describe as “lucrative offers” from three Chinese Super League clubs, thought to be Tianjin Quanjian, Hebei China Fortune, and Shandong Luneng, for striker Andy Carroll as they see him as a vital part of their attacking set-up for the rest of this season and beyond.
The former Liverpool man has continued to be plagued by injuries this season and is one of the club’s top earners, but with no opportunity to sign a replacement then it would make little sense for the club to cash in on the transfer deadline day for Chinese clubs today.
A move may take place in the summer, though, with reporting that the Hammers face a challenge in their pursuit of Saint Etienne right-back Kevin Malcuit with Manchester United now believed to be tracking the 25-year-old after his impressive displays against the Red Devil’s in the Europa League.
Malcuit would solve a problem position for Slaven Bilic, who would be desperate to bring the attacking full-back to the club, but may now face the tough task of persuading him that a move to London would suit him best for his career.
One player who could not be convinced is Belgian right-back Thomas Meunier as he told French outlet , as translated by and the :
“I could choose between six or seven clubs, most of the English Premier League. There was interest from West Ham, Middlesbrough and Tottenham. From Italy, there was interest from Napoli, where I almost signed a contract. PSG were the last club to jump into the dance. Here I am statistically more likely to play in the Champions League than in Naples. That’s why I opted for PSG.”
Now shining in Paris, the 25-year-old would have been a real bargain for a reported £5.25 million transfer fee in the summer from Club Brugges.
