West Ham round-up: Middlesbrough defender linked; Bilic wants Noble call-up; lifetime ban for fan
The report that West Ham are preparing a potential summer move for Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson as the 24-year-old faces the possibility of relegation with his current side now falling into the bottom three despite possessing one of the Premier League’s best defensive records.
Wearing the armband for much of this season under Aitor Karanka, Gibson has been ever present and is yet to miss a minute of action this season. The challenge for the Hammers will be that Arsenal are also believed to be monitoring the English central defender, and could offer a more attractive proposition.
Slaven Bilic has been busy praising his own captain, Mark Noble, as he told the press that he feels that the uncapped 29-year-old deserves an England call-up under Gareth Southgate as the quote him as saying:
“He was recognised last season as a player who should have played in the Euro Championships squad. I was surprised he didn’t. But now we have a new England manager, we are playing well, Mark is playing well, and at 29 he is at a good age. Of course he has to fight for his place with some great players, but if he continues to play well he should have a chance. He is reliable, good in a group and is a leader. Gareth Southgate will see that.”
Noble has been impressive of late but many criticised his decision not to deliver a cross into the box in the build up of Chelsea’s opening goal at the London Stadium last night, a pivotal moment in the game.
That moment was also a heated one for many Irons fans, but Ian Paul Crouch felt it more than most as he ran onto the pitch to confront Chelsea’s players. The 51-year-old was one of three arrests, according to the , and could now face a lifetime ban from following the club.
The images were concerning after problems with fan behaviour had seemed to cool in recent weeks after difficulties in the club’s first few weeks in their new home in Stratford.
