West Ham round-up: Bilic reacts to Chelsea; new deal for midfielder; goalkeeper rumours dismissed
Slaven Bilic spoke in the aftermath of his side’s defeat to Chelsea to praise their performance up against the league leaders as they held their own for much of the first half. Bilic :
“I’m really happy with the way we started. We put crosses in but we wanted more players in the box. But it was good. Then we made a mistake and you can do that against others, but not against them. They don’t miss that kind of thing. There are a lot of positives to take from the game and we are going to use them in the remainder of the season.”
In a difficult encounter, Eden Hazard’s strike was a turning point in the clash which West Ham seemed to be dominating for much of the opening encounters.
Much of the game took place in a tough midfield battle, with Pedro Obiang one of those at the heart of the game. claim that the club are now keen to tie down the Spaniard with a new contract with only two years left on his existing deal thanks to his fine form this campaign.
Reports in the media have linked Liverpool with an £18 million move for the central midfielder, who was also linked with a move away in the summer, but the Hammers are clearly determined to ensure that he is going nowhere after only two seasons in east London since joining the club.
However, Slaven Bilic has seemingly confirmed that the club will not make a move for Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, or any other ‘keeper, in the near future as he wrote in the :
“We have been linked with many players in the last three transfer windows, including Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic. In those three windows, though, I have said a few times that the only position in the team I have absolutely no interest in discussing is the goalkeeping spot. I was happy — and I am still happy — with Adrian and Darren Randolph.”
Bilic clearly has faith in his current first choice, Darren Randolph, but few fans will believe that the Croatian will not look to bolster his squad in goal next season despite the Irish international having impressed when given the chance.
