West Ham round-up: £30million move possible; Liverpool striker wanted; Bilic reacts to Bournemouth
The claim that Swansea are prepared to sell midfield maestro Gylfi Sigurdsson for a fee in the region of £30 million this summer, with both West Ham and Everton keen on the Icelandic international. The threat of relegation could force the Swans to lower their asking price, but it is not believed to be an obstacle for the Hammers.
The 27-year-old is exactly what the Irons need in midfield with a lack of creativity and attacking threat posing problems for Slaven Bilic so far this season, despite his side’s recent improvement in form.
However, this summer could see a major change in the team’s style of play as the claim that the club are preparing to cash in on interest in Andy Carroll from China and use the money from a transfer fee to bring in Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge in an ambitious move which would see a less direct style at the London Stadium.
The England international has struggled for game time at Anfield this season under Jurgen Klopp but his injury record may concern many who have criticised Andy Carroll for the same problems that have plagued his career and left both strikers failing to achieve their full potential.
It was not a lack of goals that cost Slaven Bilic against Bournemouth on Saturday though, as he lamented his team’s poor defending as he told post-match, having seen Josh King complete a hat-trick in the final minute of normal time to seal a win for the Cherries, saying:
“We are disappointed because first of all when you score two away goals, we expect to get something out of the game, especially when you equalise a few minutes before the end of the game. It is hard to concede a goal from a counter-attack. Because we were good when we were on the ball, we went basically with too many players up too early and we left the right side of our defence completely open for them… I am expecting my defenders to go up and try and win the ball.”
Michail Antonio and Andre Ayew were on the scoresheet for the Croatian but King’s hat-trick was enough to earn a victory, coming after King and Benik Afobe also missed penalties for the home side.
