West Ham now believe they could sign ‘exceptional’ Chelsea player in January

West Ham United believe they have a ‘good chance’ of signing Chelsea full-back Ian Maatsen.

That’s according to journalist Dean Jones, who has shared an update on West Ham’s interest in Ian Maatsen.

Despite groans over West Ham’s style of football this season, David Moyes has them sitting sixth in the Premier League table.

The Hammers are just six points behind fourth-placed Tottenham and seem to be in with a shout of qualifying for Europe once again this term.

Moyes will undoubtedly be keen to add to his squad in the January transfer window, with West Ham also qualifying for the knockout stages of the Europa League.

And it seems they could revisit their interest in Maatsen, a player who was linked with a move to the London Stadium over the summer.

West Ham confident over Maatsen interest

Speaking to , Jones shared what he’s been told about West Ham’s interest in signing Maatsen.

“Maatsen at Chelsea is somebody that they are interested in again,” the journalist said. “They had a look at him in the summer and I was told that they feel they’ve got a good chance of keeping him within the Premier League.

“I think their main competition might come from the continent at the moment, but West Ham are at least going to try again, and see if they can do anything.

“But yeah, it’s quite a big month actually for West Ham, and they’ve got to be really careful about the type of business they do. And also, of course, tread around the issue of David Moyes’ contract, which is starting to expire once we get into the new year.”

Maatsen is yet to start a Premier League game for Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettino.

The Dutchman turned down a move to Burnley over the summer in favour of staying and fighting for his place at Stamford Bridge. But he’s struggled to nail down a place in Pochettino’s side, having made 11 appearances from the bench in the league.

West Ham lack real depth at left-back but Emerson Palmieri has been solid for Moyes’ side so far this season.

Nevertheless, bringing in an ‘’ talent like Maatsen would boost West Ham’s ability to compete in Europe and the league.
