West Ham newbie Lukasz Fabianski deserves World Cup recall
Poland’s World Cup campaign got off to a poor start yesterday, losing 2-1 to Senegal in their opening group game. An own goal from Thiago Cionek and a Mbaye Niang finish proved enough for the Lions of Teranga to take all three points, despite Grzegorz Krychowiak’s late header.
But for Poland, it was a just result for a misshapen and lacklustre display. The result and performance of one player in particular certainly had West Ham United fans scratching their head.
Wojciech Szcz?sny started the game in goal for Poland. He looked out of sorts from the off. His distribution was poor and he was caught napping when Niang raced through to score the second goal. It was not a performance which inspired confidence.
Meanwhile, West Ham’s new number one goalie was sat on the bench. Lukasz Fabianski has today finalised his move from Swansea City to West Ham. The 33-year-old arrives at the London Stadium on a three-year deal, as the Hammers look to address their problems in between the sticks.
Fabianski was a regular for Swansea last season, perhaps even their best player as they suffered relegation to the Championship.
Szczesny, on the other hand, sat on the bench for Juventus and the decision not to play the West Ham man now seems a mistake by Poland.
It will not come as a surprise if Fabianski finds his way back into Poland’s starting XI for the next game against Colombia. West Ham fans will hope so, as he aims to show just why the club on his services.
