Report: West Ham willing to spend £40m this month, but Moyes isn’t convinced 22-year-old target’s good enough

West Ham United are willing to spend up to £40m this January, with a defender and a striker being top of the shopping list for Hammers manager, David Moyes.

Moyes is wanting to add to the squad before the month ends and has identified a number of targets, including Liverpool’s Nat Phillips and Blackburn Rovers striker, Ben Brereton-Diaz. However, despite the club being open to spending to back Moyes, reports how Moyes is still not fully sold on the Blackburn ace.

In Miguel Delaney’s latest newsletter for , he reports how Moyes has eyes on Brereton-Diaz, but is still unsure of whether the Chilean can cut it in the Premier League. The Hammers have been linked with the Rovers ace for a few weeks already. Leeds and Newcastle are also said to have watched the striker.

In terms of statistics, Brereton-Diaz ticks the boxes in terms of goals. He’s rattled in a brilliant in just 27 Championship games this term. For Chile, too, the 22-year-old has scored three in nine appearances.

West Ham have been looking for a new striker ever since they sold Sebastien Haller. Michail Antonio is doing a fine job leading the line. However, Moyes is aware that a big injury to his talisman could really hinder their season.

TBR’s View: Brereton-Diaz Is Worth The Gamble For West Ham

A lot might depend on if or what Blackburn will sell him for. However, if he is available, then Brereton-Diaz could definitely be worth the outlay for the Hammers.

In terms of goals, his record is outstanding. But his overall play, too, is noteworthy. Brereton-Diaz is quick for his size but he’s also capable of holding the ball up and linking play. Further, at just 22, there is ample time for him to get even better.

If West Ham are serious about that top four challenge this season, then adding Brereton-Diaz this month could be a big difference maker.
