West Ham hold talks with ‘excellent’ player who was club’s top scorer last season – journalist

The Sky Sports journalist has reported that West Ham are thought to favour a loan move for the Ivorian international, who has a £17.5m release clause.

Everton were previously in talks to sign Burnley’s top scorer from last season, and Newcastle have also been credited with interest.

Cornet was left out of the Burnley squad that started their Championship campaign with a 1-0 win against Huddersfield Town.

“If next week he is still here and nothing has developed then we are going to have to look at integrating him at least into the matchday process.”

West Ham hold intial Cornet talks

Burnley suffered a torrid time last season, sacking long-serving manager Sean Dyche before being relegated to the Championship on the final day of the season.

However, the signing of the ‘excellent’ Cornet was the biggest positive of the year for the Clarets, and some fans would argue they could have avoided the drop if he had played more than 26 matches.

Cornet would be the first player added to West Ham’s squad who can play in behind either new striker Gianluca Scamacca or Michail Antonio and would replace Andriy Yarmolenko as competition on the left wing for Said Benrahma.

The Algerian started last season strongly, but faded as the season progressed, and the introduction of Cornet would bring some fresh competition into the squad.

A loan deal may work for both parties as well, with West Ham not risking spending a large fee on a player who only has one year or Premier League experience.

And Burnley may be able to reintegrate Cornet back into their squad should they return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
