West Ham fans hail defender Ben Johnson after his debut in Manchester City loss

Ben Johnson made his first-team debut in the defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday night – and many of the West Ham fans on Twitter were delighted with his performance.

The Hammers suffered a narrow away loss in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium, with Sergio Aguero scoring the winner from the penalty spot.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side put in a determined display against the reigning English champions, but ultimately it was a spot-kick that separated the teams.

They are 10th-placed in the league table and just four points off seventh, while they now turn their attention to a home clash against Newcastle United in their next fixture.

Many were surprise to see academy graduate Johnson included in the West Ham senior team for the first team, especially in a huge fixture away to Manchester City.

The 19-year-old defender did exceptionally well coming at left-back and held his own against some quality attackers facing up to him.

West Ham have a knack of producing young talents and it was another example midweek that they do have the talent coming through the rank.

Johnson will hope that he continues to get senior opportunities now he’s had a taste of it.
