West Ham can do better than ex-Liverpool defender Skrtel

West Ham United are reportedly keen on signing Martin Skrtel this month.

the Hammers are one of a number of clubs interested in signing the ex-Liverpool defender.

Crystal Palace and Southampton have also expressed their interest to the player’s agent Karol Csonto.

The Slovakian will become a free agent at the end of the season when his current deal expires.

This season, Skrtel has made 24 appearances for Fenerbahce.

The team have struggled in the Super Lig and are second bottom after 17 games. Skrtel has by no means been a weak link for the side, but that should not mean West Ham should come calling.

West Ham can surely do better

With the owners seemingly happy to back Manuel Pellegrini with cash, it would seem strange for the club to want to sign Skrtel.

The 34-year-old isn’t the same player as he was during his early Liverpool days and struggles against the more mobile forwards.

Skrtel does have bags of Premier League experience having represented the Reds for nine seasons, but the division is crawling with pacy forwards who could potentially have a field day against the veteran.

Surely West Ham, with their new found ambition, can scour other leagues and find another young gem like Issa Diop, or a bargain like Fabian Balbuena.

The Paraguayan has made a great start for the Irons and he only cost £6.5 million from Corinthians ().

Skrtel for free (potentially) is probably quite tempting and would be a signing fans would expect from David Moyes or Slaven Bilic. With Pellegrini at the helm, one gets the feeling that West Ham could be doing better.
