West Ham agree deal to sell ‘wonderful’ 23-year-old player

West Ham United are reportedly set to sell Hammers academy graduate Conor Coventry in the January transfer window.

The West Ham midfielder came through the ranks at the east London club, but has struggled to break into the Hammers first-team.

Coventry has just 10 senior appearances to his name, and has been sent out on loan four times during his time at West Ham.

Now, it looks as though the 23-year-old is set to make a permanent move to League One outfit Charlton Athletic.

reported on Thursday that West Ham have agreed a deal in principle for Coventry’s permanent transfer to the Addicks.

The report added that the deal should be finalised in the next 24 hours.

A separate report from the claimed that West Ham would be selling Coventry for a fee of around £1million.

There have also been links between Coventry and Sheffield Wednesday. However, it looks as though Charlton have won the race for the player.

Sheffield-based outlet reported on Thursday afternoon that ‘developments in the last few hours mean a deal to make Coventry an Owls player is looking very unlikely’.

Conor Coventry future seems to be away from West Ham

While it’s a shame that Coventry’s West Ham journey looks to be coming to an end, it’s good to hear that he’s now making a permanent move and should get regular football.

The 23-year-old is, in the words of Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony, “a wonderful talent” (Sky Sports News, 31/8/2021, 8;01pm), and it’ll be good to see how he fares at Charlton.

The Addicks currently sit in 13th place in League One, seven points above the bottom four and 13 points below the playoff places.
