‘We know’: Jesse Marsch suggests Leeds have two youngsters who could be given their debuts this season
Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch says he could give Sonny Perkins and Mateo Joseph their debuts this season.
“I have said a long time we have been evaluating for the right striker.
“Patrick (Bamford) being fit helps us in that area. Rodri (Moreno) can play there, Dan (James) at times, but we know we have some good youngsters in Sonny Perkins and Mateo (Joseph). Good young strikers.
“A lot of it is looking for the profile without suffocating some of the young players getting changes in the next few years. Right profile and person we need. At striker, that’s not easy. I work strikers hard and it’s demanding.”
Leeds have not hidden the fact they’ve been searching for another centre forward this summer.
Attempts to sign Charles De Ketelaere from Club Brugge and Arnaud Kalimuendo from Paris Saint-Germain haven’t worked out as hoped.
Rennes forward Martin Terrier is also unlikely to be joining the Whites, as he doesn’t tick all the right boxes for the club.
Marsch could give Perkins and Joseph debuts this season
There aren’t many Premier League sides who trust youth as much as Leeds at the moment.
The likes of Joe Gelhardt, Sam Greenwood and Jamie Shackleton were all relied on to help Leeds avoid relegation last season.
Gelhardt and Greenwood in particular are the example for Perkins and Joseph to follow as young forwards to break into the Leeds side.
The fact that Marsch has this faith in his youth players allows Leeds to be very selective when it comes to signings.
Both youngsters are new to Elland Road
18-year-old Perkins was brought in from West Ham on a free transfer this summer, where he made three first team appearances last year, including a Premier League cameo against Leeds.
Joseph was signed from Espanyol in January, and has already made an incredible start to the season, scoring four goals Leeds under-21s opening match against Derby County.
If he can keep up that form, it will be impossible for Marsch to not give him an opportunity in the first team soon.
