Wayne Rooney says player Chelsea signed for just £24m was the ‘perfect’ player for his position

It’s been some time since Chelsea had a really top class number nine and Didier Drogba is often seen as the gold standard for the Blues.

Drogba, a way back in 2004, went on to become one of the very best strikers to ever do it in the Premier League.

The Ivorian star guided Chelsea to multiple Premier League titles and won the Champions League, scoring a crucial header and penalty in getting the Blues over the line in Europe.

And speaking to the channel about Drogba, former Man United star Wayne Rooney has said that if Drogba was around today, he’d be worth a fortune.

Wayne Rooney says Didier Drogba was the perfect number nine

Speaking about a number of Premier League players he played against in his day, Rooney had some kind words when it came to Drogba and the impact he had.

“He was a nightmare for defenders. When you talk about number nines now and you look at Haaland, probably the best two is Haaland and Kane, or the only two. They’re so difficult to find now and I think Drogba is the perfect number nine. He had pace, power, could score with both feet, could head it, free-kicks. If Drogba was around now he’d be worth a lot of money,” Rooney .

Drogba was so good for Chelsea

It’s good to hear an ex-pro say it but Didier Drogba really was a striker who had it all. There were times when he was at Chelsea that he was simply unplayable.

Drogba’s form over such a long period of time and his knack of scoring in huge games means he’ll go down in history as one of the best to ever do it in England.

Right now, as Rooney says, there are few in the world who can do what Drogba did as a nine.

If he was about today, then defenders would certainly find their life very hard.
