Virgil van Dijk shares what he really thinks about Ange Postecoglou as Tottenham manager
For the second time this season, Liverpool battered Tottenham on Thursday evening.
Just weeks after the Reds beat Spurs 6-3 in the Premier League, Liverpool won 4-0 against Tottenham to end their Carabao Cup dreams.
Ange Postecoglou was under pressure before this game, and now, he’s under serious pressure as Spurs’ chances of winning silverware continue to dwindle.
Tottenham have considered other managers in recent times. Edin Terzic has been linked to Spurs, while Matt Wells could take the job temporariliy too.
However, some still seem to see what Ange Postecoglou is trying to do at Tottenham, and one man who seems to rate the Australian as a manager is Virgil van Dijk.
Indeed, speaking to CBS after the game, Van Dijk actually branded Postecoglou as a ‘good manager’. Despite recent results.

Ange Postecoglou is a good manager
Van Dijk spoke about Tottenham and their manager.
Despite just trouncing Spurs 4-0, Van Dijk maintained that Spurs are a good team with good players and a good manager.
“Listen I think Spurs is a great team, they have good players and they have a good manager. They can make it difficult for you every second of the game in my opinion,” Van Dijk said.
“They didn’t cause us much problems today because we were on it and kept pressing. The first goal helped massively ad I think we were just the better team today in terms of with the ball and defensively as well.”
Ange Postecoglou’s record compared to other Tottenham managers
Van Dijk says that Posteocglou is a good manager, but there’d be many who disagree with that sentiment.
Indeed, Postecoglou has taken Spurs to perhaps the lowest low they’ve had for 20 years and they sit 14th in the Premier League table right now.
Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
14 | 24 | 8 | 3 | 13 | 48 | 37 | 11 | 27 |
Postecoglou has taken Spurs to some low depths this season, and many Spurs managers in the past have been sacked for much less.
Tottenham managers | Games | Wins | Draws | Losses | Win percentage | League position when sacked |
Ange Postecoglou | 79 | 39 | 11 | 29 | 49% | 14th* |
Antonio Conte | 76 | 41 | 12 | 23 | 54% | 4th |
Nuno Espirito Santo | 17 | 9 | 1 | 7 | 53% | 9th |
Jose Mourinho | 86 | 45 | 17 | 24 | 52% | 7th |
Mauricio Pochettino | 293 | 160 | 60 | 73 | 55% | 14th |
Tim Sherwood | 28 | 14 | 4 | 10 | 50% | 6th |
Andre Villas-Boas | 80 | 45 | 18 | 17 | 56% | 7th |
Harry Redknapp | 198 | 98 | 48 | 52 | 49% | 4th |
For one reason or another, Postecoglou has been given a lot more time than many of his predecessors, despite having a less impressive CV.
Van Dijk says that Postecoglou is a good manager, but there’s been very little evidence of that over the past 12 months or so as Spurs continue to slump down the Premier League table and out of their major cup competitions.
