Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool target Frenkie de Jong is the best player he’s played with at international level

Liverpool have been linked with a move to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona, and Virgil van Dijk has just hailed him as the best player he’s played with at international level.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have had an awful campaign so far. They have looked nothing like their previous self, and many people think their midfield is the biggest reason why.

De Jong would solve that issue instantly.

Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool target Frenkie de Jong is the best player he’s played with at international level

reported less than a month ago that Liverpool are among two other Premier League clubs – Chelsea and Manchester United – who are leading the race to sign De Jong should he decide to quit Barcelona in the January transfer window.

The Dutchman, who moved to Camp Nou from Ajax for £65 million in 2019 (), has been a key player for them. However, Barca were desperate to push him out last summer due to their financial problems. Manchester United tried ever so hard to sign him, but De Jong was adamant that he did not want to move to Old Trafford.

A move to Anfield, however, could be tempting for the Dutchman in January, especially if his good pal Van Dijk gives him a call.

The Reds defender was asked to name the best player he has ever played with in a recent interview. He got all the Liverpool lads out of the way before naming De Jong as his best teammate at international level.

Van Dijk told , as quoted by : “I’d say at Liverpool, probably Bobby Firmino. I know how difficult it is to play against him as a defender. Because he drops deep and all this stuff. So I can say him. But [also] Mo Salah, Sadio Mané, Thiago now – it’s been a joy to play with these guys.

“For the national team, I’d say Frenkie de Jong, who is really good.”

Liverpool really need a new central midfielder in the January transfer window.

The Arthur Melo gamble just hasn’t worked out, and it really wouldn’t be wise for Klopp and co to trust the Brazilian to make a huge difference in the second half of the campaign on the back of his serious injury.

A new world-class midfielder will definitely make a massive difference for Liverpool, and De Jong would be a sensational option.

Whether he’d be open to leaving Barcelona after what happened in the summer, however, remains to be seen.
