Virgil van Dijk offers update on his Liverpool future immediately after beating Brentford
Liverpool defender and captain Virgil van Dijk has offered up an open response when asked about his future after helping see off Brentford.
Van Dijk has been linked with a move away from Liverpool this summer and there remains speculation about his contract situation next summer.
Van Dijk, along with Trent Alexander-Arnold, is among a group of Reds stars who need their futures resolving.
Of course, Arne Slot values Van Dijk and he is club and team captain at the moment.
But when pressed on his future after helping the Reds beat Brentford today, Van Dijk didn’t exactly fill Liverpool fans with confidence.

Virgil van Dijk gives update on his Liverpool future
“No new players in yet, but [there is] that extra responsibility because I know the players inside out. I’m there for him, I told him that for day one. I will help him and the backroom staff as much as possible. That’s what he wants and the rest of us want,” Van Dijk said.
“I’m very calm [about my future]. The thing is, I want to play the best season I can again. I want to be important and stay important for the club. What happens? Let’s see, but I’m very calm about my situation. There’s no reason for me to think about something else because I have the whole season to play.
“Whatever happens now, Anfield has a special place in my heart. And it’s been successful. Let’s see what happens.
“I want to go as afar as possible and win it. But playing for Liverpool, one of the most if not the most successful club in the world. It feels great to wear the shirt. But there’s so much for the club to improve on, for myself and the team, let’s see what it brings.”
Liverpool were meant to be setting up a meeting with Van Dijk and his agents a few months ago but nothing has materialised just yet.
Regardless, this is something Liverpool will want to sort out ASAP and the longer it goes on, the more it distracts from the season.
Arne Slot, then, will want a resolution to the Van Dijk situation quickly.
