Vincent Kompany has already said what people ‘don’t realise’ about Wilson Odobert and it’s exciting for Tottenham

Tottenham have pounced out of nowhere this morning to announce the signing of winger Wilson Odobert from Burnley.

With so much transfer news doing the rounds and nothing ever a secret these days, Tottenham have done well to keep this one quiet.

After news broke of Tottenham’s interest in Odobert, it has since been confirmed that Spurs have paid more than £30m to sign him and he is expected to go straight into being part of the first-team for the coming season.

Tottenham have now signed a few players this summer for big money, with Archie Gray, Dominic Solanke and now Odobert joining the loan signing of Timo Werner.

Of course, Tottenham fans might be wondering just why Odobert was the man they decided on.

But looking at some past comments from Vincent Kompany, it’s easy to see why.

Vincent Kompany has already endorsed Wilson Odobert ahead of Tottenham move

while in charge of Burnley last season, Kompany insisted the young winger was way better than he was being allowed to show.

“I will almost refrain from what I really think about him, because at this moment in time, I don’t think people realise how good he is,” he said at the time.

“He’s still playing in a team that is playing for survival, but the things he’s able to do, whether it’s defending or whether it’s attacking…like I said I will refrain from what I really think because I don’t want to jinx it, I don’t want to create a situation where the expectations become too big for him too soon.

“He’s in the right place right now with us, that’s absolutely the right step. He’s getting the right game time he needs for his development.

“But we will have fond memories of him in five or six years’ time when we have this conversation again.”

Odobert to shine under Ange Postecoglou

Given the comments from Kompany here and the suggestion that the winger would be better in a team not struggling and not on the back foot, you’d have to suspect Odobert will do well under Ange.

Tottenham’s football under Postecoglou is very much free flowing and attack minded.

Yes, Odobert will have a job to get into the XI and the squad in general at first.

But Tottenham aren’t paying £30m for a winger from the Championship simply to let him sit on the bench all season.

Spurs, then, look like they might have struck gold here.
