Victor Orta states how close Leeds United came to signing Southampton star
that Leeds United came within an inch of signing Southampton striker Che Adams in the January transfer window – only for an assist against Leicester City to scupper such a transfer.
Adams, 23, joined Southampton at the start of the season after netting an impressive 22 goals in 46 Championship appearances during 2018-19 for Birmingham City. he set Southampton back £15million.
However, after a difficult start to life at Southampton, Leeds looked to lure him back into the Championship on a loan-to-buy deal. Certainly, he was strongly linked with a move as Leeds looked to replace the loss of Eddie Nketiah.

But a move failed to go through and Leeds instead completed a move for Monaco striker Jean-Kevin Augustin – despite Manchester United being linked. Orta has stated he came close to securing Adams.
Indeed, Adams remained at Southampton after laying on an assist for Danny Ings to score the winner against Leicester City with a 2-1 win at the King Power – despite Leicester beating Southampton 9-0 earlier in the season.
“I had a player in the second week of December [2019] is really available for us, near to closing (the deal), and the second week of January he’s not available because he gave a nice assist against Leicester,”
TBR’s view – Adams or Augustin?
Adams proved during the 2018-19 Championship campaign that he would be a welcome addition to any second-tier side. Whether it was a one-season wonder, though, remains to be seen, as he is without a Premier League goal.
Augustin, meanwhile, has enormous calibre and has scored goals on a regular basis for the likes of Monaco and RB Leipzig. A difficult start to life at Leeds should be put behind him, though.
If Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds can get the best out of Augustin, then he can take Leeds to the next level. Certainly, he has much more promise to be a better signing than Southampton’s number 10 Adams.
