Victor Orta is hoping Marcelo Bielsa can follow Huddersfield example with Leeds
as saying that he is hopeful Marcelo Bielsa can follow David Wagner’s example at Huddersfield Town and prosper in his second year in charge.
Bielsa, 63, has agreed to remain at Leeds for the 2019-20 campaign, after guiding Leeds to third in the Championship and within a whisker of promotion to the Premier League last season.
Wagner took over at Huddersfield in November 2015, but it was his second season as manager of the Terriers that saw Huddersfield gain promotion to the Premier League – before he kept them in the top tier during 2017-18.
The former United States international secured a place in the Premier League during his second season in charge and director of football Orta is hoping that the second-season bounce will be mirrored by Bielsa.
“There are a lot of examples in the past – [David] Wagner, Aitor Karanka, a lot of foreign coaches that in the second year were really successful,”
“After one year he broke all the records. He made an amazing season with the team. And now we want to use our weapon as continuity. That can be the best strategy for the Championship this year.”
TBR’s view – Bielsa needs backing to mirror Wagner
Leeds have brought Jack Harrison back on loan from Manchester City and defender Ben White from Brighton until next summer, while Jack Clarke has been loaned back from Tottenham. But funding is needed.
The club are reportedly close to signing Helder Costa from Wolves, but another central midfielder, a striker and a new winger could also be targeted this summer – and they need to be if promotion is to be obtained.
Orta has a point, though. Bielsa will be able to imprint his methodology even stronger this season. Keeping the Argentine is the Whites’ best signing of the summer, and he could prove to replicate Wagner’s success.
