Veteran coach reportedly open to Spurs talks, Pochettino said he’s ‘one of the best’ in the world

Tottenham Hotspur are on the lookout for a new permanent manager, and one coach linked with the Spurs job was previously described by Mauricio Pochettino as “one of the best managers in the world”.

That man is Rafael Benitez, a coach who, according to the , is open to discussions over the Tottenham vacancy.

Just over a fortnight ago, Spurs sacked Jose Mourinho following an underwhelming campaign which included an embarrassing Europa League exit at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb in March.

A number of top coaches linked with the Tottenham role have either committed their futures elsewhere or are reportedly not interested.

Julian Nagelsmann is going to Bayern Munich, Erik ten Hag has penned a new contract at Ajax, Maurizio Sarri is reportedly going to Roma and Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers doesn’t seem keen.

However, former Liverpool boss Benitez remains linked with the job and, according to the , “would consider an approach” from Spurs.

The Spaniard is currently out of work, leaving Chinese Super League side Dalian Professional by mutual consent earlier this year.

Benitez boasts an illustrious CV, having managed at Real Madrid and won trophies at Valencia, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Napoli and Newcastle United.

And back in March 2013, when Pochettino was at Southampton and Benitez was Chelsea’s caretaker, the Argentine hailed his opposite number in wake of a shock Saints .

“I have a lot of sympathy for Rafael Benitez’s position,” Pochettino was quoted by Sports Mole as .

“He is one of the best managers in the world and he has my full respect for what he has achieved in football.”
