‘Very neat and tidy’, ‘will do well’: Rangers summer signing tipped for success by former coach

Glasgow Rangers summer signing Leon Balogun has done well since arriving at Ibrox in July.

With Nikola Katic likely to be sidelined for most of the 2020-21 season, Rangers boss Steven Gerrard brought the experienced free agent to Ibrox on a one-year deal.

To date, Balogun has made three appearances for the Gers, though injury ruled him out of the Scottish Premiership meetings with Livingston and Kilmarnock last month.

Despite then having to make do with a spot on the bench against Hamilton, Brighton assistant manager Billy Reid believes he’ll continue to impress for Rangers on and off the pitch.

“Leon is a bit older but did really well in his first couple of games for Rangers,” Reid told the Sunday Mail (06/09, p56).

“He probably never got much of a chance at Brighton if I’m honest. We’re just so strong in that department.

“Leon’s a quiet guy who doesn’t disrupt the dressing room. He’s very neat and tidy at the back – and has good pace for his age.

“He did really well at Pittodrie on the opening day and will do well in a Rangers team that doesn’t look like conceding too many goals.”

Balogun’s CV is impressive, having clocked up a healthy amount of , plus time in England’s top two divisions and, with the Super Eagles, appearances in the World Cup and .

It’s not taken him long to earn plaudits at Rangers, with his three Premiership appearances so far yielding three clean sheets.

Even if he doesn’t start every game, he’ll still be crucial in a hugely important season where the Gers will need to last the distance and make the squad depth count.
