‘Very good today’: Ian Wright was seriously impressed with 22-year-old Leeds player after Liverpool win

Leeds United picked up an invaluable win last night, as Liverpool’s poor start to the season continued.

Jesse Marsch’s side ran out 2-1 winners after a late winner from Crysencio Summerville.

In particular, Wright was impressed with Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Meslier was incredible yesterday, making nine saves to frustrate Jurgen Klopp’s team.

It was the most saves made by a goalkeeper in the Premier League this season, and certainly earned his side an important three points.

He couldn’t prevent Mohamed Salah scoring a close-range volley but thwarted Darwin Nunez’s efforts to score.

His most spectacular save came from a curling long-range Nunez effort he pushed over the bar.

Wright was impressed with Meslier’s shot stopping yesterday, but wouldn’t have been so excited by his distribution.

Meslier didn’t complete a single pass last night, but that won’t worry Leeds fans too much after picking up such an important win.

Wright seriously impressed with Meslier

“He’s made good saves, he’s made the sort of saves he should be making.

“I don’t want to take anything away from him, as when you look at the finishing they could be a little bit more clinical.

“It’s one of those situations where you go to a place like Liverpool, if you don’t get it right, if your goalkeeper isn’t on it like he was today, you probably let in three or four.

“But he was very, very good today, really pleased for him.”

Being such a young goalkeeper starting in the Premier League is always going to attract some attention.

Tottenham have been credited with interest in Meslier as a potential successor to Hugo Lloris.

Jamie Carragher was also really impressed with Meslier’s performance, and the 22-year-old certainly showed how good he can be.

Marsch will be hoping yesterday’s performance is a turning point for Leeds’ season.

The American manager has been insistent that his side’s performances have warranted more points than they’ve earned.

They welcome Bournemouth next weekend with whoever loses likely to be looking over their shoulders over the World Cup break.
