Shearer on Maddison
He was asked: James Maddison – while it’s very hard to criticise anything with England right now do you feel him only getting 34 minutes for his country, three years ago, is an incredible waste of a unique talent? And could he yet play a part here?
Shearer replied: Sure, he could play a part. I think we all appreciate he’s a very good talent, but others have played well and England are in the quarter-finals.
“We know that Gareth is loyal and that will come into his thinking but it’s difficult to criticise him when England got to final of the Euros last year.
“They have a great pool of players in forward and midfield positions; he’s one.”
According to the , Maddison is the player Newcastle want the most when the January transfer window opens.
He was also linked with the Magpies during the summer but a deal did not get over the line despite a window which was really tough for Leicester.
His contract situation remains unresolved, which could make an exit more plausible and affordable for Newcastle, but for now, the midfielder’s focus will be on getting on the pitch for the first time at this World Cup.
