Vertonghen’s extended injury absence could hand Foyth a belated opportunity

Tottenham’s injury crisis has been deepened by the that Jan Vertonghen will be absent until December.

The Belgian international faces weeks on the sidelines as he recovers from a hamstring injury as Mauricio Pochettino’s already thin squad is stretched further.

With question marks over Toby Alderweireld’s future and Davinson Sanchez struggling slightly with a bout of second-season syndrome, the Argentine needs a boost from somewhere.

Juan Foyth was signed last August in a deal worth a £8m, but is yet to be handed an opportunity in the first team over an extended period.

Blame Daniel Levy, a lack of ambition, the new stadium or Pochettino, but the fact remains; Spurs have not got an awful lot of options in terms of reinforcements.

But Pochettino has shown immense faith in his countryman Foyth and kept him at club when he surely could have had a loan deal; now is the time to give him an opportunity, to deputise for Vertonghen.

One of Pochettino’s biggest assets is the amount of faith he has in young players but Foyth hasn’t benefitted yet.

Now is the time for that to change; he is 20, so not an absolute rookie, and has had enough time to adapt to life and football in England.
