Vertonghen injury setback is blessing in disguise for Tottenham

Tottenham have struggled with injuries over the past few weeks and the update regarding Jan Vertonghen is disappointing. report that the Belgian international will be missing until at least December.

Although it is bad news that Tottenham won’t be able to call upon Vertonghen, it could allow for a changing of the guard at the back. Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez could form the heart of the defence for years to come.

The pair haven’t had a lot of game-time together due to Alderweireld being injured and out of favour for the majority of last season. However, there is potential for the two to develop into one of the best pairings in the Premier League.

They managed to keep a clean sheet last weekend against Cardiff City and that provides them with confidence heading into the next two months.

The injury to Vertonghen could be a blessing in disguise for Mauricio Pochettino, as he can now play Sanchez and Alderweireld without switching to three at the back.

Spurs want to give Alderweireld regular starts to ensure that he agrees to a new contract. Meanwhile, it is important that Sanchez continues to play as he develops as a defender.

The update regarding Vertonghen means that both should expect to feature prominently until the new year.
