Would a Verratti-Martial swap make sense for Manchester United and PSG?

Two giants of the transfer market could be set for a sensational summer swap deal, if the  is to be believed. They say that Paris Saint Germain have been holding up on responding to Manchester United’s reported interest in midfielder Marco Verratti as they would be keen to take forward Anthony Martial in exchange.

Such a move would hugely reduce the financial cost for both sides, providing a huge boost for financial fair play. It may also see two players make much wanted moves. So could there be any substance to the moves?

Would a Marco Verratti move make sense?

Verratti is reportedly open to the idea of moving away from France this summer. After humiliation in their thrashing at the Camp Nou in the Champions League and missing out on the Ligue 1 title, he may feel he needs to move abroad to test himself.

The Italian would fit in well in the United midfield alongside Ander Herrera, though he does not quite match the tough tackling midfielder that Jose Mourinho seems to be looking for. His creativity would mean he may share some characteristics with Paul Pogba, and may not be the ideal choice.

PSG will also be hugely reluctant to allow one of their key players to leave this summer, and it would likely take more than just Martial in exchange to part ways with their man.

Would an Anthony Martial move make sense?

He clearly doesn’t seem to be a key part of Jose Mourinho’s plans after failing to nail down a regular spot in the team last season. With Romelu Lukaku added and Ivan Perisic potentially about to follow, his chances will be even more limited next season.

He may relish the opportunity to return to France, particularly in a World Cup year when he will want to assure his place in the France squad for Russia. That would be helped by the fact he could get more game time under Unai Emery.
