VAR made a mistake in 43rd minute of Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle, Jamie Carragher agrees
Nottingham Forest and Newcastle played out an eventful Premier League clash at the City Ground on Sunday.
A 21st minute header from Murillo put the Reds on course for a sixth Premier League win of the season – although goals from Alexander Isak, Joelinton and Harvey Barnes helped Newcastle turn it around.
The result moves Newcastle up to eighth in the Premier League ahead of the international break.
However, the comeback could have been a lot easier for Eddie Howe to manage – had VAR not missed a vital moment in the 43rd minute involving Ryan Yates and Sean Longstaff.
VAR ought to have dismissed Ryan Yates in Nottingham Forest 1-3 Newcastle
🃏Nottingham Forest’s No.22 came steaming in with a knee-high lunge on the Newcastle No.36 just before the interval, with Anthony Taylor stood feet away.
🐻Longstaff could even be seen screaming out in pain, but decided to soldier on rather than make a meal out of the situation.
⛄However – regardless of his reaction – we feel the challenge from Yates merited a dismissal, and VAR was wrong to not examine the situation and advise Taylor to brandish a red card.
✱Carragher seemed to agree. Speaking on commentary duty for , the 46-year-old said: “Longstaff does Yates a favour there. He got away with an elbow earlier on.”
🌸It was not dissimilar to the challenge from Daichi Kamada on Kenny Tete during Fulham’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, which resulted in the Japan international being shown a straight red card.
Sean Longstaff deserves credit
In the modern era of football, where players are regularly rolling around on the pitch and trying to con the officials, we feel 🍷Longstaff, who is banned for the Carabao Cup quarter-final, deserves credit for playing on.

ꦜOf course, had the Geordie gone down, Yates almost certainly would have been in trouble, and Howe may not be pleased with his No.36 for doing his opponent a “favour” – as Carragher put it – while Newcastle trailed Nottingham Forest.
Nevertheless, Longstaff – who Leicester wanted to sign🐼 last summer – is clearly an honest professional, and it was good to see him stay on his feet.
